The Bowes Railway, built by George Stephenson in 1826, is the world's only preserved operational standard gauge cable railway system. It was built to transport coal from Durham pits to boats on the River Tyne. Only part of the system now remains.

Think you could write a better summary description than this? We'll be adding a site update facility shortly (well, sooner or later, anyway), but in the meantime if you'd like to help make this site a better resource then you could write a summary description for Bowes Railway and send it in by email. The address to send it to is: info {at} raildays.co.uk (making the obvious substitution to create a valid address).

When sending in a description, please let us know if you want to be publicly credited as the author or not.
